This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Writing is frequently neglected in the TEFL world because teachers would rather have students speaking during class. Writing can be considered more difficult than speaking because it requires a greater degree of accuracy. When two or more people are communicating with each other, they are doing so for one of the following reasons: they have some communicative purpose, they want to say something, they want to listen to something, or they are interested in what is being said. Therefore, if a teacher wishes to introduce a communicative activity to the students, she should incorporate several of those factors. Accuracy activities (usually part of the study phase) focus on producing correct language. Fluency activities (usually part of the activate phase), on the other hand, focus less on accuracy and more on the flow of communication. Both are equally important, with accuracy activities being used earlier in the lesson. There are several types of speaking activities including controlled activities (accuracy based, e.g. drilling, prompting), guided activities (accuracy based, e.g. model dialogues, guided role-play), and creative communication (fluency based, e.g. debates, simulations). Many students are reluctant to speak because of: lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes,
peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic, previous learning experience, or cultural reasons. The teacher should try to overcome these issues by creating a comfortable environment. Teachers can encourage students to speak with: pair-work, group-work, plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities, purposeful speaking activities, careful planning, and plenty of time. Between writing and speaking, there are differences in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, layout, punctuation, etc. Forming English letters is especially challenging for students whose native language uses a different alphabet system. Those students may need to practice forming individual letters. Incorrect spelling can create misunderstandings and make the writer seem uneducated. Because English is not a phonetic language, teachers must draw attention to the different ways of pronouncing the same letters/combination of letters. Layout & punctuation: Punctuation and layout can vary significantly from language to language. While there are some rules for punctuation, it is frequently a matter of personal style. Teachers should look over studentsÂ’ written work for grammar, vocabulary usage, punctuation, spelling, layout, and style (e.g. formal vs. informal). Creative writing
should be encouraged because it engages the students and creates a sense of pride. This could even be done in pairs or groups. Many games can be adapted to language teaching. There are two types of games: competitive (players race to be the first to reach the goal) and cooperative (players work together toward a common goal). Those activities can be broken down into communicative and linguistic games. Games are popular with all ages, and they can be useful for both controlled and free practice.
