This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Observing the difference between the two videos made it obviously clear to me the benefits of a positive attitude and the need for student talk time. The engage phase in the second lesson demonstrates how a teacher can effectively engage with his or her students by smiling, making eye contact and making an effort to know the students names, and also by involving a little bit of humour to break the ice and create a relaxed learning environment. By using a game in the engage phase, where there are no right or wrong answers, he is able to encourage the whole class to participate. This sets the general feel for the rest of the lesson. The use of mime and gestures throughout the lesson helps the students to expand on their own vocabulary without the teacher simply giving answers or saying the words, thus reducing teacher talk time and increasing student talk time. In the study phase in lesson 2, the teacher is organised with his resources and is clear in his instructions, allowing students the time they need to complete the task at hand. Any errors or mistakes are looked at and explained, as opposed to lesson one where the teacher simply moves past these errors with no explanation. I can clearly see that group or pair work and student to student talk time is also very important in boosting
a students confidence, as it gives them an opportunity to use the English language in a non-threatening and comfortable manner with one of their peers, as opposed to in front of their whole class and their teacher, which may be quite intimidating for some of the less confident students. The activate phase in the second video is also presented to the class clearly, and the planned activity gives the students a chance to really experiment with the language they have learnt, having freedom to create with their new vocabulary. Again, in this phase there are no right or wrong answers and is a great activity to boost student confidence. In this unit I could clearly see the importance of student to teacher relationships, and how the attitude of the teacher will influence the effectiveness of the lesson. By having a warm disposition, encouraging all students to participate in a class and being aware of teacher/student talk time, we are able to create a welcoming, relaxed and productive learning environment in which students can effectively learn and experiment with the English language.", This unit made me understand the role of the English teacher's attitude and presentation plays an important role for the students participation during class.
