Unit 9 was about lesson planning. The unit went over how a lesson should be written down and the basic principles of lesson planning, the importance of being organized, what should be included in the lesson plan, and an example of lesson plans. The general rule about lesson planning is to be flexible, because if you try to control the lesson too much, it does not benefit you or your students and puts added stress on everyone, which could deviate from the original goal of the lesson. This unit in particular really drove home the different phases of the lesson plan, for example, engage, study, and activate. It provided concrete examples of how these are played out in the classroom and I felt that it finally made sense to me and that I understood. For example, for a straight arrow lesson plan, the general order will go as follows: a general class chat in the engage phase, then anywhere from 1-3 study phases which could include eliciting information from the students and writing it on the board, highlighting and drilling the grammar structure, and exercises such as gap fill or matching, and then finally to conclude with the activate phase, which is where students actively use the information they have learned in the study and engage phase to create something, like a sentence or a picture,
and then they carry out the project and present it to the class for feedback. In addition, I am so grateful that this unit provided examples of completed and blank lesson plans because I am definitely going to print them out and utilize them in my own future classroom.
