In order to communicate one needs two types of skills -Receptive and Productive skills. Just like Receptive skills of reading and listening, one needs to be well versed in productive skills as well. If one is good in receptive skills of reading and listening it does not mean that he/she is also good in productive skills. The productive skills apply the knowledge gained by a student through reading and listening to constructive sentences – through speaking and writing. It is the application of one’s knowledge to use through words and sentences in the form of speaking and writing. Thus it is the creative aspect of one’s knowledge. Accuracy and Fluency activities are two important parts of teaching English language. They both have their own applications and importance in the teaching of English language. ? Accuracy activities are generally related to the study phase of teaching as they are targeted towards correct reproduction of the language and learning basics of the language. They are entirely or partially controlled by the teacher according to the teaching technique being followed. ? On the other hand Fluency activities are more student- oriented and are not so controlled by the teacher, as they are targeted towards encouraging creativity and originality in the student.
Hence the focus is more on developing fluency rather than perfection and accuracy. It is more related to the activate stage of teaching as students apply their knowledge creatively in these activities. ? Both accuracy and study phase are equally important and it is only when they have been perfected through accuracy activities that they are able to utilize their creative skills in fluency activities. A teacher can generate student interest through different approaches before and during the activity. Following are some suggestions that a teacher can follow while planning his lessons for learning – ? A teacher can generate students’ interest by initiating a discussion on a topic related to the main subject. He can also make use of visual aids . ? A teacher can chose a topic which is close to the students and which they can handle well. If the topic is close to them they will participate instantly. ? If the teacher guides and helps the students in their work by providing useful vocabulary and giving the right instructions to carry out the activity, they are more likely to turn it into a success. ? Not only this if they are given sufficient time to plan out their work the students are more likely to produce effective results as they get plenty of time to give shape
to their ideas. ? Creating a casual atmosphere in the class is also going to help as the teacher will try to ensure that learning activity becomes more of a process rather than a product. Just like speaking a writing activity also requires careful observation on the part of a teacher. He needs to be extra careful about certain things. There are some basic differences in punctuation, grammatical structure and layout of various languages, which should be observed while teaching writing skills. Handwriting – For students whose native language is other than English or a language whose letter is different from English letters will face a lot of difficulty in making these letters. Therefore a teacher needs to take care of these issues, as a poor handwriting has a negative impact on the reader. Layout and Punctuation – is yet another issue that a teacher needs to consider while taking writing activities. Certain languages have an entirely different layout or style of writing, for example Japanese and Arabic have different layouts. Similarly many languages use different type of punctuation pattern. Not only this a teacher should also watch out for different styles of writing. He should try to expose his students to various types of formal and informal writings. Spellings
– Spellings is yet another issue that needs to be taken care of as English follows a very complex spelling structure. Many words which are pronounced similarly are written differently, while many sounds are pronounced differently though they seem similar in writing – Uncouth and couch. Not only this certain words in British and American English have a different spelling – favour and favor. Creative writing – Creative writing can help improve writing skills in students as it is writing with a purpose. It gives the students a sense of pride and they automatically take interest and pride in their work. Hence a teacher should try to inculcate creative writing skills in his students. Simple creative writing can be encouraged by making them write their own plays and stories, which can be later part played during the class hours. This will not only encourage creative writing but also help them in developing fluency in language.", I really enjoyed this unit- especially after having learnt about receptive skills. I like how this unit demonstrated the most effective ways to teach and encourage student to use their productive skills. It was interesting to learn about what makes for good and productive classroom discussion and what does not., This unit focused on teaching of
the two productive skills speaking and writing. It focused on different speaking activities which can be used in the classroom as well as reasons why students might be reluctant to speak and ways to encourage them to. It also focused on the different writing skills and also some reasons why students might find writing more difficult for example the sometimes non-phonetic English alphabet
