In this chapter we get to learn about productive skills namely Speaking and writing skills. However speaking and writing are different in many ways both are used for the same purpose to communicate. Writing skills seems to be most neglected skill. Communication plays a major part and people communicate for various purposes like 1.They have some communicative purpose 2.They want to say something 3.They want to listen to something 4. They are interested in what is being said It is the teachers duty to introduce a communicative activity to the students the need or desire has to be awoken in the students to communicate . If the above factors are not present the students are going to be less involved and participating. Speaking Activities in classrooms: Controlled Activities: These are accuracy based activity and the teacher takes control of the language. Drilling and Prompting are some examples of controlled activity . In drilling method the teacher may follow 3 by 3 drill where in the teacher calls upon 3 students and says a word or a phrase and the students repeat 3 times. Guided Activity: Accuracy based but a little more creative and productive. The output is still controlled by the teacher but the language isn't ...its student controlled . Eg Model dialogues , Guided
role plays Creative Communication : Fluency based activity , so the students take control under the guidance of the teacher . The scenario is created by the teacher. Free role play , Discussions , Information gap , debates , simulations , communication games. Encouraging students to speak : It is important for the teacher to find out why a particular student is reluctant to speak , the necessary support has to be provided so that student opens up. There can be many reasons as to why the student is reluctant ...The teacher must overcome these hurdles and encourage student interation 1. Lack of confidence 2. Fear of making mistakes 3. Peer pressure 4. Lack of interest in the topic 5. Previous learning experiences 6. cultural reason The below techniques can be applied to encourage interaction: 1.Pairwork 2.Group work 3.Plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency 4.Create purposeful speaking 5.Change classroom dynamics 6.careful planning 7.provide ample time for students to think about what they need to speak Important factors about writing skills 1. Handwriting 2. Punctuation and layout 3. Spelling 4. Creative writing Games in classrooms : Games are important for kids as it helps in brain development.
