This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In Unit 5, I studied the topic of Lesson Planning I studied and understood the needs to write an organised lesson plan. For me, it was interesting to note that I need to write out lesson plans and allot appropriate time to each segment of work I wish to cover. One significant part is that I need to check for the balance of skills, which I sometimes fail to practise. Occasionally, I do get carried away with one particular skill. I am usually quite organised. Reading up on a unit would have already been done earlier. If I have an activity using sentence strips, these would have been printed and laminated. I enter the class about 15 minutes before the lesson starts and do the board work. I set up the teaching aids, bring in the CD player and appropriate CDs, the realia (where appropriate) and ensure that the equipment is functioning correctly. I write my aims for the day on the white board. I am a little over-enthusiastic at times! However, I now realize that I have not allotted enough time for ‘small chat’ with students who stream into the class as I have been focussing a lot on the preparation. Perhaps, too much attention to detail. Setting the mood and breaking the ice is what I need to improve on. I seldom thought of working on my personal aims as it had
always been my prerogative to teach my students and let them learn as much as they can absorb. After studying this unit, I realize that there are some areas in which I can reflect upon and make improvements. An example is my I-Pad skills. I need to spend some time training myself up on the diverse use of the I-pad for use in my lessons. About anticipated problems, I now realize I need to have a solution for any problem I may face. For example, if I have a very weak student in my class, I have to put up an action plan. I should use the buddy system. I should get the student a buddy who can help him/her. I may have to make suggestions (in private) to that student to attend a lower level class so that he/she will not feel ‘lost’ in class. Another example is if I have a student who refuses to open his/her mouth, I may have to give him/her prompts to coax him/her into trying to give an answer. I would encourage him/her and explain that it is all right to make a mistake as everyone learns from mistakes. I used to wonder if I had lost time by stretching the explanation of certain grammar points. Now I know that I have done that correctly as long as I am flexible enough and find time in another lesson to make-up for it. The Standard Lesson Plan model is very useful.
I am using something like that, but without the ‘Phase’ field. This will be useful as a guide – to know if I am planning to conduct the class using the straight arrow ESA, the Boomerang or the Patchwork structure. On self-evaluation/reflection – Previously, I reflected on my success/failure to achieve what I had planned to do for each lesson. This was done almost immediately – after each lesson. I usually give myself a pat on the back and share my achievement with colleagues (orally) and tell them what I had done. If I had not achieved my intended goals, I would think about what I should do to improve the next time. Sometimes, I ask my colleagues for suggestions. From this lesson, I realise how important it is to actually write what I felt on hindsight. I should plan and document the effectiveness of the three phases of study, the strengths and weaknesses of the students as well as my own and put in some constructive action for the future. In the past, I did a few out-of-context activities to enhance the students’ learning. Now, I realise that those few activities are not enough. Variety is the answer or students will be able to forecast what I am going to do next! ? In summary, having analysed what I have been doing and what I should have done,
I believe I have significantly increased my knowledge and understanding on Lesson Planning and will see myself as a better practitioner! As a next step, I need to put everything I have learnt in good use. Wish me luck!", It was an interesting unit about Lesson Planning.
