Unit 8 discussed the seven most common future tenses in English. The future simple tense is used for spontaneous decisions, predictions, future facts, and promises or threats. An example sentence is, “I might run the race.” To teach the future simple tense, we can use horoscope and fortune telling activities, write imaginary wedding vows, or think of positive statements about the future in response to pictures of bad situations. The future continuous tense is used to describe an action in progress at a future time, to predict the present, and to make polite inquiries. An example sentence is, “Martha will be running in the Tokyo Marathon next week.” Some activities for teaching the future continuous tense are practicing making excuses and to plan a meeting between two students with different schedules. The future perfect tense is used to speak of actions that will be completed before a future time. An example sentence is, “She will have finished her homework by then,” Some activities for teaching the future perfect tense include creating planners and doing a discussion about what each student will have done by the end of the school year/ by the time they are 30 etc. The future perfect continuous tense is used to describe how long an action will have been
happening by a future time. An example sentence is, “You will have been waiting a long time.” Some activities for teaching the future perfect continuous tense include having students conduct a survey of how long people will have been doing certain activities and having students find out who has been doing an activity the longest. Another common form is the 'going to' form. This form is used for plans, intentions, and predictions based on present evidence. An example sentence is, “They are going to watch a movie later.” One teaching idea for this form is to have students create weather predictions. Another is to have students write a short story based on picture prompts. Interestingly, we can talk about the future while using the present simple or present continuous tenses. This case is common in schedules or when describing future arrangements. Two example sentences are, “The train leaves at 6pm.” and “We're playing soccer after class.” A good activity to practice using the present tense in this way is to have students pair up and try to plan a meeting around two different schedules.
