This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit actually brought us into an English classroom where we watched a teacher giving the same lesson to a group of students twice. The first video was a stunning example of what NOT to do as a teacher. Just watching it made me cringe and feel as uncomfortable as the students obviously were. The teacher was not excited to be there, was not engaging students but outright ridiculing them, did not smile or encourage the right answers, did not give any sort of helpful instruction at all, and still somehow expected the students to know what he was talking about. He didn't care about knowing the names of anyone in his class. Anyone who has ever been taught anything knows that when you don't understand something, the worst possible reaction a teacher can have is to tell you that it's easy or blindingly obvious. This will make a student shut down completely every time, as is seen in the video. The students were confused and reluctant to volunteer information. They clearly did not understand what was being taught, and the teacher just moved on without any attempt to clarify. At one point when a student asks a question, he blatently ignores it. If this were a class I was paying for or expecting to learn anything from, I would be furious at the teacher. In the second video, the teacher's
attitude is much better, he smiles and gets the students involved- his first priority is introducing himself and knowing the names of the students. He breaks them into pairs to complete the worksheets, which is helpful for some of the weaker students especially. He used drilling and had the students repeat sentences for practice. He gave examples of the responses and content he was looking for, provided clear instructions, and used lots of questions to draw out students' answers. I was also struck by his highly effective use of gestures- when we learned about that in a previous lesson, I was having trouble thinking of gestures that would be useful while teaching, but the visual aids he provided in the lesson were helpful such as flipping his hand while asking the students to turn their papers over. One thing I would have focused on more would have been to use more examples of "can't"" as that word is harder to pronounce and certainly changes the meaning of what you are trying to say if people can't understand you clearly. I also would have spent a bit less time in the beginning coming up with animals
