The future tenses are the main subject of unit 8. Future tenses in English can be complex; there are seven different ways of expressing them. Students may find some of them to be confusing especially when it comes to the present tense being added to the mixture. Most future tense sentences can easily be identified by the addition of “will” in the sentence. We’ll start with the Future Simple, which uses shall or will with a verb. This particular tense can be used for future facts and certainties, promises, predictions that have no present evidence, assumptions or speculations, spontaneous decisions, or threats. Students should also know the difference between shall and will. Shall is great for suggestions or invitations and can have a formal connotation while will expresses a stronger intent. Future Continuous can easily be identified by the “will be” connected with a present continuous verb. We use this form to indicate something is in progress at a particular time in the future, it is a prediction of the present of what we might think is happening now. It is also great for polite inquiries without having to influence the listener’s original intent and they may refer to future events that are fixed or decided. Future Perfect tense is a sentence
form that tells us that something has been completed or achieved by a future point of time. This type of sentence is relative to that specific time we speak about. You can identify this type of sentence through the words “will have” with a past participle verb. Some students may have a difficult time differentiating this form from the Future Perfect Continuous, which does not indicate something is completed but presents us with the idea of how long the action has continued by a particular time. Like the Future Perfect it has “will have” but with the addition of “been” connected to a continuous verb. The final tenses that speak of the future are actually structured in the present tense form. The “going to” future tense uses the present form of “to be” with “going to”(to is an infinitive) connected to a base verb. This type of sentence is used for intentions, predictions based on present evidence, or plans that were made by the time it was spoken. This sentence form can be easily confused with another future tense form, the Present Continuous which does not use the verb form “to be” in it. The difference in usage is that it is used for definite arrangements or for decisions/plans that have no time frame. This is especially
confusing if you want to use the continuous verb of “going.” There is a distinction between “I’m going home” versus “I’m going to leave.” “I’m going home” indicates that you have decided to go home but not explained when. While “I’m going to leave” indicates an intention but there’s still some room for a possibility of perhaps staying. And then we have the Present Simple, which has a more formal or impersonal connotation. It is great for formal announcements, timetables and schedules, and forgiving a more impersonal tone that might be suitable for the workplace. ", In this unit the complicated future forms of the English language are introduced and explained quite well. I liked the way everything was summarized and I like all the examples
