*There are four basic skills in any language.Reading and listening are receptive skills.Speaking and writing are productive skills.We should try to incorporate all of them into our lessons. *There are two reasons for reading and listening: 1-For a purpose ;it helps us to achieve some particular aim or goal (how to operate a video recorder). 2-For entertainment;we find it pleasurable in some way(reading a novel) Our reading ind listening may be a mix of the above two motives. *Reading and listening are not simply matters of the eyes and the ears but also a matter of using our minds to understand words and process them in our pre-existent knowledge to gain true understanding. *Readers and listeners employ a number of specialist skills such as;predictive skills,scanning,skimming and deductive skills. *Teaching and learning receptive skills presents problems which contained in the text,the topic and the tasks. *To decrease and solve the language problems; 1-the teacher should teach the students the difficult and unknown language and structure prior to commencing a reading or listening activity. 2-also the teacher should be careful about selecting materials. 3-the teacher should chooses interesting topics for his students. 4-the teacher should motivate and engage his students
in the tasks. 5-the teacher should provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding. ", This unit presented methods to teach the two receptive skills: reading and listening.
