This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Reading, listening, speaking and writing are equally important in learning English language. Sometimes we focused on one soil, but still important to include all the others in the lesson. First, we discuss the receptive skills - reading and listening. We read/listen for a purpose or for entertainment. We read /listen with a purpose when we want to achieve a goal, we read/listen just for entertainment because we like it and it's fun. There are different skills when reading and listening: Predictive Skill: We guess what's the content by just reading the headline. Skimming: We don't read every word or listen to the whole dialogue, we just want the general idea of the content. Scanning: We focused only on what we want to hear and read. Detailed Information: We read/listen every detail with concentration to gain the full knowledge of the context. Deduction from the context: In here, we have to read/listen between the lines. We have to expand our understanding beyond on what we hear/ listen. When teaching and learning the receptive skills, we should be aware the connection with the language contained in the Text, Topic and the Tasks the students will perform, to avoid problems when listening/reading. The word length, sentence length and number of unfamiliar words can
also become a problem for English learners. Text - Knowing the students and their interests is vital, each of the students have different interests, so the teacher must choose a variety of topics over the period of time. The teacher makes sure that all of the students interests are equally met. Create interest - The teacher should get the students motivated and engaged in the task. Doing so will have the possibility for the students to listen/read with understanding. In here the teacher can use the Engage phase activities. Tasks - The teacher should give the students, a fast that is not too easy and not to difficult for them. A task that is based on their level. There are ways to approach language difficulty: Pre-teaching vocabulary - Teaching the students difficult languages/structures before listening/reading, but only pre-teach the words that are necessary, leave the harder words for later. Careful selection of texts - Authentic texts are not designed for foreign students, whereas the non-authentic texts are. The non-authentic texts will allow the students to access to the material that is more suited for them, whereas the authentic texts expose students to become more confident in their skills. However, authentic
texts must be carefully selected, and be focused on what the students know, rather than how much they don't know. Balanced is the key. I would say, listening and reading is not just using your eyes and ears, but literally absorbing and understanding the words we read and listen. ", This unit discussed the importance of teaching receptive skills which include listening and reading. It also discussed the two reasons and motives for listening which were for a purpose and for understanding. How we read and listen
