This unit delves into lesson planning, an important aspect of teaching. Lesson planning has three major functions: it aids in thinking logically about the stages of teaching (e.g. ESA) while writing down the expectations of what the students should have learned by the end of the lesson; it is a working document with goals, ideas, and activities but should remain flexible in order to respond to class needs and dynamics; and finally, it is a record not only for the teacher but also for anyone who might have to teach the class in the teacher's absence. A lesson plan should have several characteristics such as teacher name, observer (if there is one), date and time of class, class language level, room, number of students, context (what will be learned) teaching aids (pictures, chalk, etc), learner objectives (what the students should be able to do by the end of the lesson), personal aims of the teacher, anticipated problems and solutions for students (e.g. pronunciation/drilling), anticipated problems for the teacher (e.g. talking loud enough for all students to hear/be constantly aware of volume of voice) and finally the lesson plan itself (procedure, phase, timing, and the type of interaction between students and teacher). A lesson plan should be simple and flexible. Also, the lesson
plan should allow for smooth logical transitions between the different phases so that each phase builds on the previous stage. I might also build on past lesson plans or provide insight into future lesson plans.
