Lesson 2 was far more effective as teacher expressed appreciation for student answers, smiled and gave feedback about what was correct & why, showed pictures and explained each task before asking the students to write or draw anything. He showed examples and wrote examples on the board. Students were happy to answer questions and participated far more frequently. In the first video the teacher had the opportunity to engage students, he did not give a clear definition of Modal Auxiliary Verbs, (MAV) nor did he write anything on the board as an example to show students what he meant. He did not go on to clarify what these verbs were, but kept telling students they were easy, which did not engage students at all. He then used some complex words, like obligatory, deductive, permission then asked students what the rules were for MAVÂ’s. He could have engaged them but moves straight onto Interrogative form, leaving students just as bewildered as they were with the MAVs. The attitude of the teacher is really important and has a big impact on how the students feel about the class. When studentsÂ’ answers are appreciated and valued, they are encouraged to participate further. The use of mime and humour in the second video created very positive outcomes for the whole class. When the
teacher arrives in a positive and happy frame of mind the class has a good chance of going very well.
