Unit 4: Vocabulary, grammar and functions Introduction: There are four things that students need to do with new language: a. Be exposed to it. b. Understand its meaning c. Understand how it’s constructed d. Be able to practice and produce it. Grammar is said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while vocabulary and functions are the leaves that add beauty and variety. One does not appear so attractive and appealing without the others or one in isolation isn’t truly effective. Teachers must ensure that students are introduced to the new language in a balanced and manageable way. Teaching Vocabulary - Factors to consider in vocabulary: a. Similarity to student’s own language b. Similarity to English words already known c. Spelling and pronunciation d. Appropriateness Selecting vocabulary – criteria to use: a. Appropriate to the student b. Appropriate to the task c. Frequency and coverage – how often student can use d. Teachable words – for beginner students need very clear and visual language What student needs to know about a vocabulary item? a. Meaning b. Use – how and when it is appropriate to use c. Word grammar – where it belongs d. Interaction – how it interacts and affects other words e. Spelling – how it is written f. Pronunciation
– how it is spoken Techniques for vocabulary teaching: Engage – methods to use to help engage the students and to elicit/explain meaning: a. Realia – activities used to relate classroom teaching to the real life, people studied b. Mime and action c. Pictures d. Contrast e. Discussion f. Discovery Study – activities to include: a. Gap-fill exercise b. Word searches c. Crosswords d. Matching exercise e. Example sentence f. Pronunciation exercise such as drilling g. Study from text and dialogues Activate – stage of vocabulary lesson may include some activities as: a. Open class, small room or pair discussion b. Role-play c. Simulation d. Story building e. Material production task (poster, advertisement, etc) f. Debate Typical ESA vocabulary lesson – Typical ‘straight arrow’ structured ESA vocabulary lesson for lower level students, example: for household furniture vocabulary Engage – Open class activity where students share information about where they live, type of house, rooms they have. Materials like, pictures and floor plan may be useful for discussion. Study – Teacher shows small text, or play dialogue of someone describing their house. Check the pronunciation, spelling, meaning, etc. Activate – Teacher tells small groups or
pairs of students that they can design their perfect house, complete with furnishings. Presentation of their dream houses and discussion about the pros and cons of each house they would like to live in. Grammatical structures As new words are introduced, students need to know what the language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is and how it is said/written. Techniques for presenting and practicing language structures: Engage – a. Discussion b. Scenario building c. Question and answer d. Prompting e. Using pictures, drawings, real objects, mime etc Study - a. Intonation and pronunciation patterns b. Looking at the language in context through texts and dialogue c. Choral and individual repetition (drilling) d. Gap fills e. Information gaps f. Sentence word order activities (unscrambled jumbled sentences, etc) g. Sentence building Activate - a. Communication games b. Role-play c. Story-building d. Discussion/Debate Typical ESA grammar lesson – Typical ESA patchwork grammar lesson for mid level students in which the goal is for them to construct/talk/write about a topic using past simple tense. Engage – students discuss about the topic, what they like Activate – In pair of students, they will write brief synopsis about
the topic the have seen. Study – From the synopsis, analyze the usage of the past simple tense. Further study activities to reinforce meaning, formation and pronunciation. Activate – In groups, students will write short story prompts. Study – Group passes story to another who check for correct usage of past tense. Any errors have to be discussed/analyzed in class. Activate – Chain story communication games. Teaching language functions – This includes areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, and disagreeing, suggesting, etc. Teaching language functions also includes appropriateness of the language in terms of what kind of language they use – formal, informal, tentative, technical etc. The most effective pattern Teacher can use are the boomerang and patchwork type ESA lessons. Role-plays are very useful here. ESA Boomerang type lesson: Engage – Students talk in open class about their leisure activities. Teacher use prompts to get students opinions on certain other activities. Activate – Students will invite other students to try what they like and look for others who like it the same. Study – Listen to the dialogue, make comparison, analyzing, accepting and rejecting the invitations. Pronunciation and other study exercises used
to reinforce. Activate – Role play in pairs.", In this unit
