The unit 10 video lessons were very interesting to watch and learn from. The different videos showed the importance of building a rapport with the students and making them feel comfortable, as well as how the instructor's attitude can affect a class. As a student in the first lesson, I would have been intimidated, confused, and frustrated. The instructor assumed that the students understood what a modal auxiliary verb was, and even when it became apparent that they didn't understand it, he continued on with the lesson. He didn't seem to want to adjust his lesson for the students, or even explain what he wanted from them. The lesson was totally teacher-centered, and his lack of motivation as an instructor affected his students. he was uninterested in or unable to answer questions and didn't seem to care about the atmosphere of the classroom. The second lesson was much better. The instructor was engaging and showed the students that he was interested in teaching the material. He built a rapport with them and had a great attitude, which allowed the students to feel comfortable about participating in class. He engaged the students, encouraged them, and seemed to help them feel more confident in their abilities. The instructor did a good job of explaining the lesson and making it clear
what he wanted the students to accomplish. Because of this, the students had a better attitude toward their instructor and the atmosphere of the classroom was comfortable. I appreciated the first video for giving a great example of what not to do in a classroom. Sometimes teachers have bad attitudes and it can really affect the classroom. Even as an instructor, I had a difficult time understanding the lesson and what he wanted from his students. The lack of participation was not due to uninterested students, but from an uninterested and uninteresting instructor. The second video showed a great lesson, and gave me ideas for my own classroom. I think the activities were interesting and fun. They really turned it into a student-centered lesson and allowed the students to actively participate. It was clear that both the instructor and the students were interested in the lesson.
