This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit discusses multiple teaching methods to improve studentsÂ’ productive skills, speaking and writing. There are two basic activities: accuracy and fluency activities. Both of them are equally important, but the nature of each activity is different. Accuracy activities focus on producing correct language, while fluency activities allow students to experiment and be creative with language. There are two types of accuracy based activities, including controlled activities and guided activities. In the former, language is controlled by the teacher as seen in drilling. In the latter, the output is still controlled by the teacher but the exact language isnÂ’t. For example, guided role-play is included in guided activities. In contrast, creative communication, including free role-play, discussion, debates, and communication etc. are considered as fluency based activities. The scenario is usually created by the teacher, but the content of language is not controlled by the teacher. There are a number of techniques to encourage studentsÂ’ interaction, including pair-work, group-work, careful planning, practice before fluency activities, and letting students have time to think about their answers. In the typical ESA lesson, the teacher should not correct all the mistakes
that students make in the activate lesson (generally fluency based activities are used). Instead, it is better to provide feedback after the activities. To teach writing skills, different factors from speaking skills should be considered, such as handwriting, spelling, and punctuation. It was not addressed here (maybe it will be addressed later), but I wonder how the teacher can address different types of writing in various settings. For example, an academic essay in school and an e-mail letter for friends take very different writing forms (to some extent, this is true for speaking as well). ", I learned in this lesson the importance of the productive skills. Speaking and writing are important in becoming fluent in any language and the ideas and examples provided in this unit have been very helpful. The creative speaking and writing interests me the most as something that would really allow the fluency of the language to kick in., The productive skills are speaking and writing. Speaking requires more fluency because youÂ’re on the spot and have less time to form your words but writing requires more accuracy and is often an underutilized and underpracticed skill for language learners.
