This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The four basic skills in every language; which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Reading and listening are known as receptive skills while speaking and writing are known as productive skills. The most important thing in every teaching lesson a teacher must including are these four basic skills. Unit 11 mainly focus on reading and listening; teaching receptive skills. Reading and listening can help achieve a certain goal and influence students to get involve. These receptive skills are also used for entertainment. The best way to read and listen is by using your ears and eyes. Not only eyes and ears but also understanding the words that are being processed. Some problems with listening and reading is that there might be problems regarding the language and the topic or task given from the teacher to student. It’s best to use familiar words with students so there will be less confusion and problems. Using ESA, teachers can easily outline a simple receptive skills lesson. Some examples are having exercises such as asking questions or asking students to fill in the blank using answers in a box to complete the given samples. For example, teachers can ask students “What is the dress code for the party?”, “Which countries influenced the United States of America
to eat sushi?”, etc. Another idea to help students understand receptive skills is having them make comparisons using words like more than, less than, as…as, -er than, etc. Overall, I have learned about the importance of receptive skills and came to understand how to incorporate and deliver its significances to students.
