Unit Twelve This unitÂ’s topic is Teaching Productive Skills. There are two equally as important productive skills, which are speaking and writing. Speaking skills are more concerned with fluency, where as writing is more concerned with accuracy. Speaking activities in the classroom can be controlled, guided or creative. Careful planning by teachers when it comes to speaking skills is essential. Usually more guided and controlled lessons are used before letting the students become creative. Students can be reluctant to speak in the classroom for fear of making mistakes or a lack of confidence. Teachers must allow for a positive environment within the classroom, so that the students can feel as comfortable as possible and thus achieving maximum communication/speaking results. Only reoccurring or key grammatical mistakes should be corrected within class time. With the other non-key mistakes, teachers should just note them down so that they can keep a record and incorporate these points in future lessons. Written activities in the classroom are usually kept to a minimum because it is more frequently used in homework activities. Speaking and writing are to some extent different because we do not usually write the way we speak. Usually when it comes writing is it more formal and
contracted forms in speaking are not translated into writing. English is not a phonetic language, so this makes spelling and punctuation more difficult. Some words in the English language sound and are spelt the same but have different meanings when put in different contexts.
