The unit covers two of the four main ways we produce or receive language (Reading, Listening), and some of the main reasons we use them. Of course there are many sub-categories of skill, and the ways and reasons we use receptive and productive skills can be overlapping. The unit also touches on some of the problems with receptive skills lessons, and illustrates key elements that need to be considered when planning them. It gave me insight as to the kinds of activities best suited for this type of lesson, and helped me to think about flow and content. Although it is best to try and have lessons where all four receptive and productive skills are used, Unit 11 showed ways to have the students using all four language skills while at the same time still having a lesson which focuses on a single receptive skill or both receptive skills. In general, I got a better understanding of how I operate as an instructor. Each unit gives me more insight. I certainly discover more of the weak points in my teaching and this gets me to think of ways to adapt what I do in order to improve it. At this stage, most of my plans are quite general and are based around using all four receptive and productive skills without a particular focus on any of them - save for perhaps speaking. Unit 11 showed me ways
to be more dynamic in how to integrate many different elements while at the same time having a specific focus on whichever language skill is being taught or practiced most. Although we can tune our lessons to the relative ability of our students, I felt the content we have for the unit would be better suited for at least lower intermediate or intermediate students. The required foundation in grammar and vocabulary, the use of passive grammar in the exercise material, and the size of the article, among other things, made the material too challenging for anyone lower.
