This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The Unit is based on 2 videos demonstrating 2 ESA lessons based on the same topic. In the first lesson the teacher makes a number of mistakes and the lesson is carried out in a confusing and intimidating way, whereas the second lesson is being taught effectively. In lesson demonstration 1 the teacher makes some basic mistakes. He does not call students by their name, thus demonstrating poor interest and rapport with the students. He gives and writes on the board poor, confusing and at times wrong explanations of the lesson topic (modal auxiliary verbs). He does not use images and miming. His lesson is not properly planned and carried out (he checks his notes several times looking a bit lost and confused). He does not monitor the students, in fact he prefers reading a book instead of observing the students. His instructions for worksheets and for the final project are either absent or very generic and confusing (''create something, draw an animal that can do lots of things'', he does not provide any examples). During the study and activate phase he does not give any timing to students and does not provide clear feedback and corrections (just simple gives the right answer). In lesson demonstration 2 the teacher is able to create a positive and engaging atmosphere where the students
participate affectively and in a confident and active manner. The teacher has a better rapport with students, as he salutes them when entering and leaving the class, and calls them by their personal name involving all of them throughout the lesson. He uses a lot of gestures and miming to capture the attention of the students and to help them understand vocabulary and instructions. The teacher speaks slowly, with a clear voice and uses vocabulary that it appropriate to the students and to the task. His explanations and instructions are clear, as he provides examples, descriptions and uses images and drawings for aid. He gives timing to the students for their worksheet/project completion and reminds them throughout the lesson of the time they've got left to finish their work. He provides good feedback to students by asking them to correct their own mistakes first or asking the other classmates to do so if they are unable. The two videos have brought me into a real classroom setting showing me what teachers should and shouldn't do in their lesson and how to conduct a well structured ESA lesson. I benefited from observing and analyzing how the teacher was able to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere in the second video/lesson and, on the other hand, how to avoid generating confusing
lessons and intimidating students. I feel that planning interesting activities and finding effective and clear ways to convey them is one of the main goals of a good teacher.
