Unit 5 titled lesson planning begins by discussing whether or not planing a lesson is completely necessary. Some believe that a strict rigidity to following a lesson plan can be detrimental and that a more flexible lesson plan can be far more beneficial to students. According to the text a lesson plan works in three ways as an aid to planning, a working document, and a record of past classes. Some basic principles used to make lesson planning easier are to keep it simple, not scripting the lesson, maintaining consistent structure, writing anticipation time for activities in the margin, give the lesson a smooth flow with similar activities, and keeping it flexible and open to adaptation. To be organized while writing a lesson plan one can run through the lesson plan beforehand, make sure equipment works, lay out materials, arrange seating, clean board, and talk to students as they enter classroom to get them into the learning mood. The structure of a lesson plan should include learner objectives, personal aims, context, teaching aids, anticipated problems, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, sate and time, and teacher and observer names. It is also a good idea as a teach to have a section of your lesson plan devoted to self evaluation to help them
focus on each lessons strengths and weaknesses. The lesson then discusses some key points to remember when planning a sequence of lessons. The firs of these is flexibility, as changes may need to be made during a class which can change the whole sequence of lessons. The second setting goals so that both teachers and students have something to aim towards throughout a sequence of lessons. After goals comes revisions, which introduces the need to review and update lessons to ensure that the information is being retained by the student. The final key point is variety and balance which states that all skills should be included alongside a variety of different activities which will help sustain students interest in the subject matter.
