This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, I learned useful tips for what to do and what not to do when teaching a class. The teacher's attitude affects the class and is very important to how the class will go. In the first lesson, the teacher was rude and abrupt and dismissive towards the students and they felt intimidated and reluctant to participate. In the second lesson, the teacher was smiling and encouraging and waited for the students to answer when he tried to elicit answers from them, and the students were more eager to participate and could follow the lesson more easily. In the first lesson the teacher's voice was fast and hard to understand. In the second lesson the teacher's voice was more clear and he spoke at a slower pace that was easier to follow. Also, in the first lesson the teacher did not know the students and did not attempt any introductions. He showed little interest in the students. In the second lesson the teacher started with introductions and soon after, we could see that the students had name tags on their desks so that could help him remember who each student was. These lessons emphasized how important it is to give clear instructions, and how demonstrating an example can be very helpful too. In the first lesson the teacher handed out the materials without clear instructions
and with no examples and the students were confused. In the second lesson the teacher clearly demonstrated how to complete the activity with an example before passing out the materials. In the first lesson the lesson was very teacher-centered and the students had little to no talking time. In the second lesson the teacher encouraged the students to speak when he was trying to elicit answers and he had the students pair up for more student to student talking time. In the first lesson the teacher made no effort to monitor the students and continually interrupted their flow of work, interjecting about things that he had forgotten to say before. He looked very unorganized. In the second lesson the teacher monitored the students but did not interrupt the flow of work. He was very ready and organized for the class. In the first lesson, not only did the students not understand and had a hard time following along, but the teacher did not allow enough time for good feedback on each activity. The class time finished and no one had time to participate and get feedback. The students had no better understanding of the lesson point at the end of class than when they first entered the class. In the second lesson the teacher allowed ample time for each activity, for everyone to participate
and for everyone to get feedback. The students clearly understood the lesson point by the time the class had finished. This unit was very helpful for me.
