Speaking and writing are the two productive skills covered in Unit 11. Speaking involves both accuracy and fluency. Accuracy focuses on the correctness of the language and is practiced using set language structures. Fluency focuses more on creativity and speaking with a natural flow. There are many different speaking games instructors can used based on the lesson. Speaking games can motivate students and make it more enjoyable for them to practice language in the classroom setting. The instructor must create the need and desire for the students to communicate. Speaking activities, whether guided, controlled, or focusing on creative communication, can create interest in the topic and make students more comfortable with speaking. Writing is also an important skill. Speaking and writing are used in different ways, but are used for the same purpose--communicating. Teaching writing can be difficult, as the we write is different than the way we speak. It is also more difficult to incorporate writing activities into a lesson, which causes that skill to be neglected. The factors that need to be incorporated into a lesson and considered are handwriting, spelling, punctuation and layout, and creative writing. Handwriting isn't such an issue, but needs to be covered, as many students may have
trouble with writing English letters if their alphabet system is different. Spelling plays an important role when teaching and learning writing. Spelling mistakes can cause confusion and is easily caused my incorrect pronunciation. Pronunciation is linked to spelling, and instructors must practice spelling rules. This is because English is not a phonetic language and letters and words can be pronounced in many different ways. It is also importatnt to focus on layout and pronunciation. Students should practice with many different writing styles and layouts to learn the differences between them. They should also study puncuation, especially if it is vastly different from their language's punctuation rules. Creative writing allows students to practice in an interesting way. This can be encouraging to the students and can help the students enjoy writing activities.", I thought this unit was fun because it was apparent what the crucial criteria was for doing so. The game section was good in terms on giving you ideas for activities but it wasn't anything I immersed myself into.
