This unit focused more on what to teach and how to teach it. Teaching vocabulary was the first topic. It's important, when teaching vocabulary, to consider some critical factors for the student - how similar words are to their own native vocabulary, similarity of new words to words already known in English, spelling and pronunciation, and the appropriateness of the new words to the students' ages and levels. Vocabulary should be selected according to appropriateness to students and task, how often the word is used in regular conversation, and how the word will be taught to the students. Students must understand the meaning of the new word, how to use it and where it belongs in conversation, how the word interacts with other words around it, and spelling and pronunciation. If a student cannot understand all these things, the vocabulary is likely inappropriate to the student's level. Teachers are also responsible for teaching grammatical structure of the English language to students. Here, students must know the meaning of different structures, how and when to use it, patterns and formations of different words and structures, and the differences between spoken form and written form. Language functions are also a part of what English teachers are responsible for teaching their
students. Language functions are areas where language is used - invitations, agreements, disagreements, refusals, suggestions, and so on. This area is best taught by the boomerang technique and role-playing situations. This allows students to immerse themselves in a situation and see how it would truly play out in an English scenario.
