This unit focus the attention on Productive Skills which are: Speaking and Writing Skills. When talking about Speaking skills we can say that we speak because we need something or we want to achieve something. In speaking we can make a distinction between Accuracy( that is the correct use of the language) and Fluency (that is the ability to talk without stopping to think).During a ESA lesson, we focus on Accuracy in the Study phase while we focus on Fluency in the activate phase. There are 3 basic types of speaking activity: 1.Controlled: used in the study phase; here the teacher is ready to help students in term of what they need to say and how they go about to saying it. 2.Guided: used in study and activate phase; this is less structured than the previous one and a little bit more creative 3.Creative: used in the activate phase, where the students have to actually create their own answer to a given tasks (question). Writing tends to be more formal than speaking English. When talking about Writing Skills we have to consider the types of writing: 1.Situational: when we write a post card we will use a certain type of write that will be different from the one we use to write a formal letter or an email 2. Creative: the type used to write a story or a dialogue or poetry In writing
is also important the Handwriting ( to make sure the students know how to correctly write a letter, this is particularly important for students whose native Language uses a different alphabetical system from English language ), the Spelling (in English many words have same sound but totally different spelling) and the Punctuation. Games have also their importance in an ESA lesson; a game is an activity with rules, a goal and an element of fun, they can provide useful controlled practice and free practice material.
