This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 11 dealt with teaching receptive skills in the classroom. Receptive skills consist of reading and listening. They can be employed for a purpose (to fulfill a specific goal), or for entertainment/enjoyment. Oftentimes, activities include both of these. This is ideal because it makes learning fun. When learning, it is important that there is a focus not only on the word and its meaning, but also on its context (how it fits into everyday life). Many skills are used to give context to words. These include using predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for a general idea (don`t focus on every word), concentrated listening for detailed understanding, and deducing from context (see beyond just the literal meaning). This is great, but there can be many problems with receptive learning. These range from sentence and word length to totally new words. Generally, reading is easier than listening since students can re-read the information. Listening only gives the listener one chance to comprehend. English teachers have many tools at their disposal though to ensure comprehension. Pre-teaching vocabulary can help students with essential words they need to understand the overall meaning of a text. Texts should be selected carefully, balancing Authentic texts (focus
on previous knowledge and build confidence), and Non-authentic texts (made specifically for language students and their specific skill level. In addition, lessons should often include topics that interest students. What interests a teacher may not necessarily interest a student. Interest can be cultivated in many ways. For example, the class could discuss the topic; the teacher could give visual prompts, or any other engage activity. Comprehension tasks are essential to encourage understanding, and not just check it. These challenges should be within the studentsÂ’ ability. Common activities include jumbled texts and jigsaw readings. All this can be intimidating but there hints that can make it easier. Use interesting material to engage students, build interest before jumping into the lesson, pre-teach difficult words while giving students room to discover others, and give students challenges within their ability level that help them grasp new concepts. Finally, mix-up the materials used and skills practiced. Variety is the spice of life and will ensure the students will be more engaged and will better retain new information.
