This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit which was based upon the videos of classroom teaching. The first video in which very poor teaching and learning took place, where as the second lesson in which teaching and learning was good. In the first lesson the teacher committed many mistakes such as he didn't welcome nor leave the class properly when compare to the second lesson. The welcoming is important as it breaks the ice and sets a mood of students. In the first class the teacher rarely smiled, he wasn't enthusiastic nor did he properly clear the doubt of a student when she questioned about 'can' and 'could'. When talking about the phases of a lesson, the teacher shouldn't have introduced the students' to the topic in the engage phase itself as they look completely unaware of it. Besides that he was also questioning them about what modal auxiliary verbs are, when they don't know about it. Hence the engage phase was a complete failure. In the study phase and activity phase the activities that the teacher carried out where all ineffective in delivering the language point to the students. Due to lack of enthusiasm in the teacher the students mood also became dull and boring. However, the second lesson was much more effective than the previous one. The teacher began and ended it appropriately. The teacher's
voice, gesture, eye contact was brilliant and was able to effectively grab and retain student's attention till the end. The rapport between the students and teacher was good because the teacher had introduced himself by writing his name on the board and was able to use students' name. The teaching aids that the teacher used i.e., role playing of the animals to get the vocabulary from the students was appreciable. The Phases were carried out in an effective manner as the aims of each phase was accomplished. The activate phase was also effective to an extent as the teacher demonstrated what was to be done in that activity but did he use the word 'imaginary' a little more the students wouldn't have used the names of animals that are real. It was a good learning experience.
