This unit is about productive skills. Productive skills include speaking and writing. Both skills are based on communication. There are activities to help with speaking and writing. Accuracy activities, used in the study phase of an ESA lesson, concentrate on producing correct language accurately. Fluency activities, used in the activate phase, concentrate on allowing students to be creative without having to be 100 percent accurate. Accuracy based activities include drilling, prompting, model dialogues and guided role-playing. Fluency based activities include debates, discussions, information gaps, and communication games. To encourage students to speak can be difficult for teachers. Nevertheless, teachers can help ease students fears by putting them into groups or pairs, make speaking activities interesting, or give students more time to think before they speak. Writing has a few differences from speaking. Writing involves handwriting, spelling, punctuation, and layout. Students usually do not have to concentrate on the above while speaking. Nevertheless, when it comes to writing activities teachers should let the students write creatively in order to encourage students more. Finally the teacher can use games to communicate both writing and speaking skills in the
class. Some examples of games are Twenty Questions, Hangman, Twister, and Pictionary. The many activities mentioned in this unit definitely helped me to come up with more ideas to use during the different phases in my lesson planning. Both productive and receptive skills are important when teaching students since all of these skills will be used throughout the entire lesson.
