This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit I have learnt about the two types of productive skills that are speaking and writing skills. In this context we can discuss two things that are accuracy vs fluency. Accuracy refers to the correct usage of grammar & vocabulary i.e., the language. Fluency refers to the ability to speak without stopping to think. While planning and delivering lessons the accuracy of language in focused and enhanced in the study phase whereas fluency in the activate phase. There are three different kinds of speaking activities that are controlled, guided and creative activities. The controlled activities are accuracy based activities wherein the language is controlled by the teacher. It involves activities such as drilling and prompting. The guided activities are also accuracy based but with a little more touch of creativity and productivity wherein the output is still controlled by the teacher but the exact language isn't. It involves activities such as model dialogues and guided role-plays. The creative communication activity is a fluency based activity wherein the scenario is created by the teacher and the content by student. It involves games such as free role-play, discussions, information gap, debates, simulations, etc. Accuracy and fluency in students can
be achieved only when the students actually speak but many a times they are reluctant to do so which might be due to lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, cultural reasons, previous bad experiences, etc. Students can be encouraged to interact by using techniques such as pair-work, group-work, careful planning, changing the classroom dynamics, etc. We must follow certain guidelines to ensure a free speaking activity takes place in the class. To ensure this we must plan a little before taking the lesson such as deciding our aims clearly, trying to predict what problems the students might face, preparing the necessary materials, working out how long the activity might take and working out on our instructions. The things to work out during the activity involve arousing students' interest through visuals, etc. Setting up activity so that students know the aims of the activity as to why it is being carried out in the class, making sure that students have enough time to prepare for an activity, reminding students the required structures or vocabulary for the activity to ensure least mistakes, etc. Feedback, which is to happen after the activate phase of every lesson shall involve comments from the teacher as to how the students or class performed, sometimes recording
the activate phase so as to play it post activity to make the students realize their mistakes, noting down recurrent mistakes of students and correcting them in private, etc. When coming to writing skills, these may differ in those whose native language is not English. Everyone has a personal style of writing, it is okay until it is having some negative impact on the reader. In such a case students must be encouraged to improve their handwriting. The first problem that is encountered by learners while writing is the spelling. As spellings in English are very difficult sometimes because of the same pronunciation. This problem can be reduced only with lot of exposure to the vocabulary or language. The fact that some languages have some punctuation and so don't have at all also comes as a problem to learners of English language. Besides this the layouts such as e-mails, formal and informal letters, postcards etc have to be taught to the students and be made to practice. Creative writing must be encouraged in students. They should be encouraged to write short stories, poetry, essays, etc and be appreciated for their work to motivate them to practice writing as this is the only way they can improve their writing skills.", Speaking and writing are both the
more creative areas of the English language so students should be encouraged to experiment with the language. By experimenting students can become much more comfortable with learning the language. A teacher should now when to give the students freedom and when to correct the students to show them where they are going wrong. Writing can be the most difficult to teach as the teacher has to pay attention to handwriting and punctuation
