This unit was very beneficial to me as I could see an instructor teach the same class the same lesson but with a different attitude and a very different approach in teaching. In the first lesson the teacher didn't smile and was not enthusiastic at all. His explanations were not clear and he used jargon and difficult language that the students did not understand. In addition he looked like he did not know what he was doing - in terms of his knowledge of English and also of the lesson plan. His organisation of the lesson was poor too and students were unsure what to do when it came to activities. One more thing was that he kept saying the language was very easy and made students feel quite uncomfortable. In contrast the instructor was like a completely different person in the second class. In fact, for me, it was more interesting to see how the class reacted to that. It was very interesting to see how they much they were willing to participate and how much they enjoyed the lesson. The teacher pretty much did the reverse of the first lesson - his speech was slower and clear, he was enthusiastic, the lesson was fun and he allowed the students to interact with each other - he didn't just keep it teacher - student orientated. In addition the teacher used the student names and showed genuine
interest in the students which helped build up a strong rapport. He also smiled a lot which really made a big difference. I learned a lot from these videos and I will try to make my lessons more like the teacher's second lesson. I would say in particular, I would like to reduce my explanation time and use more eliciting in the Engage stage.
