Unit 11 covers reading and listening skills. There are four basic skills that are paired into two categories: receptive which are reading and listening skills, and productive which are speaking and writing skills. There are two main reasons that we read and listen. Sometimes it is because we have a specific purpose that relates to a goal or aim, other times itÂ’s for entertainment, something that elicits pleasure or is enjoyable. It can also be a mixture of both purpose and entertainment. Reading and listening require more than the senses because our minds can decide how we do these activities. It requires a pre-existing knowledge of words, meanings, and sounds that is processed in our heads. Our minds can use these skills in specific ways that have specific goals. We can read to predict things such as reading a news headline, even though we donÂ’t necessarily read the entire article. Sometimes we are scanning for specific information that we want or we will skim through an entire article just to get a general idea of its contents. If we are reading instructions to do things, we will read everything in detail. There are times though that these skills require even more effort than the literal meaning itself, as if thereÂ’s a hidden message. There are different
advantages of reading and listening. When we read, text is available for us to think about what we are looking at. When we listen, its instantaneous and ephemeral; the mind has to be sharp and process quickly. There are strategies in teaching that can incorporate these advantages. You can pre-teach vocabulary that are essential to activities that you are about to do in your lesson. However, we have to be aware of the difficulty level of the material and its appropriateness for the students. Starting off on topics that interest students help in motivation. We can create interest into students through exposing them to things that they may have not have interest before. Finally, providing tasks that promote understanding of the words and syntax.
