Unit 9 dealt with Lesson Planning and the process involved. Lesson Plans have a few functions. First, it`s an aid to planning, containing what you expect students to be able to do by the end of the class, and how this will be achieved. Next, a lesson plan is also a working document, which works to keep a lesson on track and serves as good reference material. Finally, it works as a Record that shows what the class did previously and what materials were used. While making a lesson plan, there are some principles that should be taken into account. This includes, keeping lessons simple, don`t over script lessons, use a consistent structure, balance the skills focused on, calculate a time estimate for each part of a the lesson, and keep the lesson flexible. Next, there are a few steps a teacher should take to keep lessons organized. Steps include, bringing the actual lesson plan as reference, the materials, check to ensure all equipment works, arrange seats, and chat to students to break the ice. One of the most important part of this unit was the actual parts of a Lesson Plan: 1.) Learner objectives – what the students should be able to do by the end of the lesson 2.) Personal aims – what area of teaching you want to improve 3.) Context – lesson themes and how it fits
into past and future lessons 4.) Teaching aids – materials needed to carry out a lesson 5.) Anticipated problems (for students and/or teacher) – potential problems and your solutions 6.) Procedure – activities used to achieve the learner objectives 7.) Phase – Engage, Study, or Activate 8.) Timing – anticipated time for each activity (be realistic and flexible) 9.) Interaction – who will be interacting: teacher-student (T-S), student-student (S-S) 10.) Class level – class`s English language level 11.) Number of students – anticipate how many students will attend 12.) Date/time – allows you to keep a historical record 13.) Teachers` and observer`s names Once a teacher has written a lesson plan, it is important that they monitor and analyze their lesson. There are several helpful questions to consider when look back on how to improve a lesson. For example, were the learner objective and personal aims were met? What was the accuracy of anticipated problems and solutions? Were their any Modifications made to the lesson procedure? What were the reasons for them and how effective were they? How effective were the Engage/Study/Activate phases? What were the Strenths and Weaknesses of the lesson? And finally, what are some areas for improvement? Lesoon
planning for a sequence of lessons is very similar, but comes with some unique challenges. Flexibility is needed to update plans and modify aims (to compensate for disrupted sequence). Goals should be included in the sequence. Also, it is important to revise lessons to ensure students retain the information. Last but not least, lessons should include variety and balance to apply all skills and keep students engaged. Unit 9 really tied it all together for me. It was great to actually see what should go into a lesson plan. Not only that, one could actually see how the ESA method fits into lesson planning.", I can see the advantages and the disadvantages of lesson planning in this unit. I can understand that a Teacher who is new to this profession may want to have a good structured lesson plan but with increasing knowledge and experience might then aim for a more flexible and less rigid lesson plan
