This unit explains the receptive skills of reading and listening, and why we use them. We use them to achieve a particular aim, like when reading or listening to instructions, or for pleasure like rading a book or listening to music. In order to understand the context of what we read and listen to, we also use various skills like skimming, where we take in enough information to get the gist of what is being said or read. We also scan particular words in order to get specific information, for example when we are searching an arrivals board at a train station, we may scan either the time of arrival, or the departure town. We look or listen to detailed information when following instructions, for example when putting together a flat pack wardrobe. We can also use skills of deduction when reading a text which implies something else. Pre-teaching key and essential vocabulary from the text or dialogue, is an excellent way of helping students to put these skills into practice, in order to show them that they don't have to understand every word. The selection of texts is extremely important, together with the topic. Various topics should be chosen over a period of time, thus appealing to the students different interests. Interest needs to be created to motivate the students. Discussing
the topic in the engage stage is very helpful, together with pictures, diagrams etc. During the study phase, the excercises need to promote understanding. Finally the activate part should be linked to the text used.
