The four basic skills in a language are; reading, listening, speaking, and writing. There are many different reasons why we read and listen. Here are some of the categories; for a purpose- is reading and listening to attain a goal whether reading a manual or listening to a lecture. For entertainment – reading or listening for pleasure such as reading a novel or listening to music. As we read or listen, we understand the context differently than the others. The reason for these is we have different receptive skills and those are; Predictive skills – predicting the content through the headline or introduction, Scanning – focusing on the information we are looking for, Skimming- reading or listening to get the general meaning of the story, detailed information- focusing on every detailed information, and deduction from context – to be able to read between the lines and understanding beyond the literal words. Listening and reading can be difficult if they don’t understand the language well. It is important to expose the students as much as possible and here are some ways to tackle the language difficulty; to teach the vocabulary and structure before the reading or listening activity, and careful selection of texts. It is also important to choose a variety of topics
to cater the entire studentÂ’s interest to keep the class fun and interesting. If the teacher motivates the students, they will listen with enthusiasm. The teacher need to also provide a comprehension tasks that promotes understanding. A task should be achievable. Here are some of the factors for a successful receptive skill lessons: choose material that interests the students, build interest before reading or listening, vary the type of material, etc.
