This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The two videos provided a very helpful and interesting insight into two lessons. The first video showed students who were intimidated and confused by their teacher´s harsh and sometimes unfriendly behavior. Student participations was very low due to the fact that they didn`t want to do anything wrong. The teacher obviously made fun of the whole situation telling the students that everything is very easy, and everyone can do it. One student wanted to know the difference between can-could, but the teacher didn`t want to answer the question till the end of the lesson, when he told her there is no difference. In this lesson there was no real teacher-student interaction, student participation was low, and students didn`t talk very much. The teacher handed out worksheets without explanation, looks bored, starts reading a book, wanders impatiently around, obviously waiting for the lesson to be over. In the second video the teacher smiles, tries to learn the names of his students, there`s a lot of teacher-student interaction from the beginning. Students participate actively, they know what they are supposed to do, although referring to some known animals, even in the students` native language might have helped to engage them deeper into the topic. Maybe the engage stage was a bit too
long, but after producing the right verbs for the activity, students knew how to use can/can`t, and produced correct sentences, sometimes with the help of the teacher, correcting a few mistakes. All students participated in the lesson, there was pairwork, and the teacher explained what he wanted them to do next. I learnt that it is mostly the attitude of the teacher, how s/he comes into the class, how s/he interacts with his/her students, his/her patience that decide about the positive and successful or negative outcome of a lesson. Both videos showed a lot about teacher behaviour and students` reactions towards the teacher.
