The four language stills are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills, speaking and writing are productive skills. Unit 11 focuses on the two receptive skills. We have two reasons to read or listen: to achieve a goal (purpose) or to be entertained. These two motives are not mutually exclusive and can, and even should in many cases, be combined. I think that how we read and listen can be influenced by cultural factors (in a broad sense). The skills we use to to read and listen include: prediction, scanning, skimming, focusing on detail, and deduction from context. How one predicts or picks out detail or deduces meaning from context is informed by how they experience the world which is why I consider it a cultural activity. Reading is easier to practice than listening because the text for reading is physical and can be reviewed whereas listening is often only presented once (unless it is a media that can be replayed). It helps to pre-teach vocabulary the learner will need to process the text. It also helps to pick appropriate texts, determining whether to use authentic or non-authentic texts for a certain lesson. Authentic texts are found in the “real world” while non-authentic are created specifically for an educational context.
It is important to select topics and texts that interest the students in order to motivate and engage them.
