This unit is about lesson planning. Writing a lesson plan has three important functions. The first function is lesson planning is an aid to planning. Writing down what you want the students to accomplish at the end of every lesson along with how you plan to do this is an important function of a lesson plan. A lesson plan is also a working document. The lesson plan is there is help keep teachers on target and gives them something to look at through the lesson if necessary. Finally, the lesson plan is a record. The lesson plan allows a teacher to keep record of what a class has done and accomplished. How a lesson plan is written is entirely up to the teacher. Nevertheless teachers should keep it simple, keep it flexible, use and maintain a structure, write down the time it might take to achieve each goal and check for a balance of learning skills for the students. It is important to not follow the lesson plan directly but use it as a guide. Having a lesson plan allows a teacher to keep organized. For example a teacher can make sure all the materials needed for the lesson is accounted for. Also that if there are worksheets needed for that lesson that they are readily available to hand out to students. What should be included in a lesson plan is as follows: Learning
objectives, personal aims, teaching materials and aids, context, anticipated problems with solutions, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date and time and of course the teacher and a monitor(if there is one). Learning objectives are important because it is what the teacher wants the students to achieve at the end of the lesson. After reading this unit, I learnt that being organized is key to being a good teacher. Lesson planning allows teachers to be organized. Lesson plans give teachers a tool in what they want to accomplish as well as what they want their students to accomplish as well. I also learnt that just because I have a lesson plan written down does not mean I have to follow it strictly. I need to be flexible when following a lesson plan. Sometimes something might come up that will not allow me to do a certain worksheet during the study phase of lesson. Therefore I have to remember not to get discouraged, but keep note of what was not completed during that class and maybe try to incorporate it into the next lesson.
