This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 11 focused on teaching the Receptive Skills of reading and listening. The 4 Basic Skills in any language are reading, listening, speaking and writing. Speaking and writing are called Productive Skills. We read for a purpose or to be entertained. When reading or listening we use particular skills to comprehend material. We use predictive skills to predict content from a headline or introduction. When searching out specific information we use scanning. For a general idea of an article we will sometimes skim through. Detailed information such as directions require us to concentrate fully. We also make deductions from the context in which we hear or read. When teaching we have to be careful to use language appropriate for class level when speaking and reading. Reading is generally easier for students than speaking as they can repeat a phrase or paragraph a number of times until they grasp the meaning. Pre-teaching unknown vocabulary will remove obstacles to students' understanding of text or spoken dialogue but this must be balanced with allowing the students to try to understand without knowing every word. We can pre-teach essential words and come back to other vocabulary later. A teacher should try to balance authentic texts which are not designed for language students
with non-authentic texts which are designed for language students to develop a greater level of language skills. Choosing good and varied topics for dialogue and text will also motivate students so it is important to learn student interests. Creating interest will keep students motivated and engaged. Finally comprehensive tasks should promote understanding. These tasks should be realistically achievable. ", This unit is about teaching the receptive skills
