This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit with applying one`s lesson plan in the classroom. I watched two videos, one of a bad teacher and the other of a good teacher. The first video had a teacher attempting to teach about modal auxiliary verbs. His lesson was full of bad practices. He had a patronizing attitude, claiming that the material was easy and thus deterring the students from offering an answer for fear that it`d be wrong. As for manner, he would ask students if they understood, and continue on when it was clear that they didn`t. When a student did ask a question he would say he didn`t understand, or say he`d give them the answer later. Rapport was not good since he did not know the students names. The teacher also talked fast, and read a book while the students were writing (instead of being engaged). With teaching style, the instructor offered no clear explanation, faced the blackboard while talking, gave assignments before explaining the instructions, and was unorganized searching through his papers. No me the structure was inherently flawed, with there being no Engage phase, and no visual ques aside from the board. As a result, the students were confused and intimidated, as well as did not understand or participate very much. On the other hand, you have video 2 with an arry of good practices
on display. The teacher was positive and engaged. He wrote his name down and then asked for everyone else`s. He also seems a lot more nicer and patience, which seemed to help rapport. He followed the ESA Straight Arrow, starting with an Engage Game where the students wrote down as many animals as they could think of. The teacher then wrote the answers on the board. He then tied this into new vocabulary by giving descriptions, showing pictures, and miming the new animals until the students guessed. He continued into the Study phase with Recitation, a Gap-fill exercise, and an animal worksheet where they had to write 10 sentences. He was effective by giving examples and involving all students. Finally, the teacher ended with Activate phase activity where the students were instructed to make a fantasy animal in pairs. In addition, they were supposed to write what the animal could and could not do. The only point of confusion was when some students drew real animals. But as a whole, the class was a vast improvement with many best-practices being used. So, the students were happy and interested, as well as understood and participated a lot. I learned that lesson structure and content affect the studentÂ’s understanding. All of this taught me how to modify my attitude, manner, and
teaching style in the classroom for maximum effectiveness. It actually made me realize that I had been jumping into the Study phase with recitation and drilling, and had totally been overlooking the Engage phase.", This unit was very interesting to see how important a teachers attitude is and the effect it has on the students. In the first video you could see that the teacher didn't want to be there. The students therefore felt disappointed and didn't want to participate. It is also important to speak slowly and clearly
