Unit 12 is about Teaching Productive Skills, i.e. Speaking and Writing. It starts with explanation of the types and guidelines of activities used for speaking and techniques to encourage students to speak, and then demonstrates a typical ESA free speaking activity lesson. Then the text goes on talking about factors affecting writing skills, and then demonstrates a typical ESA free writing activity lesson. It ends with ideas of games applicable in classrooms. I have learnt that there are two activities: accuracy activity and fluency activity. Accuracy activity is based on correctness of language while fluenty activity puts emphasis on communication. These two are equally important. For speaking practice in classroom, there are three types of activities: controlled activity, guided activity and free activity, and for writing practice it is simliar. Whatever we may like to engage our students into, we have to ignite their interests in the activity and encourage them to overcome shyness to speak and interact. Among all activities, we have to strike a balance between overdoing and negligence. When giving feedback, we need to be smoother and flexible as not to make good students arrogant or make weak students lose confidence. For every speaking and writing lesson, even games lesson, we
have to prepare to our fullest capability. To get prepared is a must for teachers, especially for a novice TEFL teacher. Reading and listening as receptive skills are like sands and stones, paving the road for writing and speaking as productive skills.
