Unit 10 has us compare two opposite (REALLY OPPOSITE!) ways of running a lesson on the usage of can/can't. The comparison elicits some of the characteristics a teacher and his/her lesson planning should have in order to be effective. What did I learn? (1) If we want to be good teachers, we shall always smile when in class so that students feel they can learn in a relaxed environment. (2) Working in pairs is a good idea in the study and activate phase of our ESA lesson structure so that students can speak more and do not feel threatened by the teacher or a more 'outgoing' peer who is not afraid of speaking in public. (3) It is always nice to know the name of the students, both to address them for questions and to look less intimidating to them... that is why it is also nice to introduce ourselves to the class at the beginning of the lesson. This adds up to building a good rapport. (4) A good thing we also want to do in class when checking students' answers after e.g. a study phase is calling them randomly to keep them alert! (5) We always want to look interested in the students' opinion and ideas and praise them when they says something (esp. if it is correct) because it is not easy for some of them to overcome their shyness. Video 1 was a nightmare, I actually do not know how those
poor Thai students made it through! I would have left or said something! Besides this, it was really relevant to compare Video 1 with Video 2 and it helped me. P.S. Mr. Mark has really strong acting skills, my compliments.
