This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Having covered the topic of receptive skills in the last unit this one looks at the two productive skills, which are speaking and writing. Firstly it discusses the reasons why people communicate with others and informs us that these factors should be taken into consideration when introducing a communicative activity and also more importantly that the teacher must create a need and desire for his/her students to communicate. It moves on to inform us of the differences between accuracy and fluency activities, the importance of each and during which part of an ESA lesson they should be taught. It then looks at a range of speaking activities that can be used in the classroom: drilling, prompting etc for controlled activities (accuracy), using model dialogues and guided role-play for guided activities (accuracy) and lastly free role-play, discussions, information gap worksheets, debates and simulations etc for creative communication (fluency). Additionally it informs us of the most common reasons why a student might be reluctant to speak and gives techniques for encouraging interaction. Following this there is an example of a free/creative speaking activity lesson with planning guidelines. The next subject covered in this unit is ‘writing skills’ and it looks at the following
factors which need to be taken into consideration and incorporated when planning a writing lesson: handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation and creative writing. Again it gives an example of a typical writing activity lesson with ideas for each of the engage, study and activate stages. Lastly this unit focuses on the theme of ‘Games in the Classroom’ of which there are two types, competitive, where teams or players race towards a common goal (communicative) and co-operative, where teams or players work together towards a common goal (linguistic). We’re told that since games are so popular with learners of all ages and are proven teaching aids we, as teachers, should regard them as an integral part of the syllabus. They can be used either as warmers or during activate phase activities and many well known games can be adapted and incorporated for TEFL purposes. ", This lesson was very similar to the previous lesson. It was wonderful to learn about how to use gaming in the classroom as I know as a student I loved classroom activities. I would enjoy providing the same fun learning for students. Especially knowing that English is not an easy language and any stress relief while still learning would be a blessing., This unit was fairly difficult when it came
down to the ESA questions again. I'm hesitant to submit my answers because I don't think that I have the questions from the ""Study"" phase in the right order. I do however know that if I was teaching in a class
