This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The two receptive skills are listening and reading. There are two reasons for using receptive skills: for a purpose, or for entertainment. There is more that goes into our reception and understanding of language than the words themselves. Context is also important. There are also secondary skills that are important for reception: predictive skills, scanning skills, skimming for the general idea, looking/listening for detailed information (when all the details are important), and deducing the meaning of the words not only from the literal meaning but from the meaning within a context. It's harder for language learners to capture meaning from a challenging spoken sentence than a challenging written sentence. When teaching new language, a balance needs to be struck between pre-teaching the words they will encounter and letting them access and experience unknown language. One important part of receptive skills is making sense of language when you donÂ’t know every last word. Along the same lines, students should be exposed to both authentic and inauthentic texts. Authentic texts are important to practice receptive skills because in real life you wonÂ’t know every word you hear and see as if it was just taught to you in a classroom. There will always be new and unfamiliar
words. It's also important to check comprehension. Some good comprehension tasks are partner jigsaw activities (they each have info the partner doesnÂ’t and have to help eachother fill in the blanks by asking and answering questions). Also, paragraph and story jumbles are good interactive ways to check understanding. The lesson gave a good example of a comprehensive patchwork lesson teaching receptive skills. I enjoyed reading this part of the unit and imagining teaching it to students, as well as thinking up my own ideas to expand on the lesson. I think the ideas in the unit give a good example of how to make the lesson fun and interesting for the students.
