This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Grammar, vocabulary and functions represent three different ways into new language. One of these is typically chosen to serve as the main focus of a lesson. Students of elementary ability are often the most enthusiastic to learn new vocabulary, though all students need to regularly learn new words, what they mean, how they are spelt, how they are pronounced, their grammatical role in sentences and how they relates to other words. Teachers should select new vocabulary words that have a higher frequency and coverage and can be represented visually. Grammar lessons are also essential. When teaching grammar, it is important not simply to teach meaning, use, and patterns, but to also point out differences between spoken and written forms. Likewise, when teaching language functions, the teacher should remember to guide students toward differentiating between appropriateness, such as between formal and informal language. Functions are often best taught using a ‘patchwork’ or ‘boomerang’ ESA method (such as E>A>S>A), perhaps because the ‘activate’ stage of the method allows many opportunities for students to role-play being in scenarios where they must use language for a particular function.
