Lesson planning can be controversial, and there is many forms and ideas surrounding the need for daily lessons.Certainly when a teacher must have a script and is inflexible, or on the other hand when a teacher allows the lessons to drift off course, a problem will ensue for that teacher and her students. A balanced approach would entail lesson planning that is useful in creating a road map for teachers to follow along a wider road of teaching a whole unit as each lesson should build on the last.Each lesson should have objectives (what the learner is expected to learn), procedures to be followed, and materials needed to accomplish the learning objective. Teachers should know where they are going with a lesson, and should also know what activities the student will be doing during a lesson. A good model is the engage, study and activate phases, each with their own activities. A lesson is a working document, in that it does not have to be rigidly adhered to during the course of the lesson, if something is working out particularly well. It is really a guideline and a record to follow withing a curriculum of many language activities (conversation, grammar lessons, written and oral). The main idea of this unit is to keep the lesson student centered, with clear objectives. Teachers who
know their students can pick out activities that the students will enjoy and which will promote learning. Keeping it flexible and simple helps the teacher adapt the lessons as necessary. The teacher who faces students organized and prepared, with materials that are ready to go will be successful, even after some initial stage fright.
